History Goulburn, the trading name for the Goulburn District Historical and Genealogical Society Inc., is a volunteer run organisation which aims to preserve the history and heritage of Goulburn and District. The organisation has an experienced Research Team which carries out research on families, buildings and the history of Goulburn. History Goulburn will soon be returning to its historic premises at St Clair Villa, 318 Sloane St Goulburn. Keep a watch for opening days and times for the Museum of Goulburn and the Research Centre.
From its early years until the mid-twentieth century, Goulburn was the dominant commercial and government centre in southern NSW. For much of that time it was a very wealthy city, second only to Sydney. The city’s wealth derived from gold brought in from regional goldfields, notably the Araluen, its very fine grazing land, famous for producing high-quality Merino wool, and its early role as a large railway centre for NSW. As a result, Goulburn is now home to an extraordinary range of heritage public, commercial and residential buildings, including the monumental courthouse and two large cathedrals, which recall its past glory. Miles Franklin lived in the Goulburn area and it is believed her experiences here in the Federation Drought (1895-1903) led her to write ‘My Brillian Career’. The renowned Australian artist, Sydney Long, also came from Goulburn.
Many of the city’s beautiful heritage buildings were designed by the architect E.C Manfred. Manfred arrived in Goulburn in 1879 and worked with Edmund Blackett on the design and build of St Saviour’s Cathedral. Manfred also designed a huge number of Goulburn’s significant buildings, many of which carry his trademark diamond design in their brickwork. History Goulburn estimates that 90% of the buildings Manfred designed are still standing.
Manfred also worked on the original designs for the buildings at Yarralumla, now part of the Governor-General’s residence, and designed substantial renovations and extensions to the Braidwood homestead, Mona Farm.
History Goulburn is preserving a very large collection of architectural and business documents relating to the work of Manfred and his son H.C Manfred during the period 1879 to 1950. History Goulburn believes it to be one of the most significant architectural collections in NSW and possibly Australia. As a result, it is raising funds for a full heritage assessment of the Manfred collection.
